Largest photovoltaic park in Europe, to be built soon in Romania

New Investments in Romania

The Austrian company Enery has started construction of the largest hybrid photovoltaic park in Romania, in Ogrezeni in Giurgiu County. The project will have an installed capacity of 761 MW, larger than a nuclear reactor in Nuclear Power Plant from Cernavoda city (700 MW).

The energy produced by the photovoltaic park (1.5 TWh per year) will be able to cover the annual consumption of 684,000 households, i.e. over 1.3 million inhabitants, the company says.

In addition to the energy production component, the investment includes a battery storage system with a capacity of 1 GWh, as well as the construction of an electrical transformer station necessary for connection to the grid.

The park is scheduled for completion in the summer of next year, and the announced investment will be 460 million euros (cca 400 million pounds).

“Next year, when the project is completed, it will be the largest hybrid project in the country, but we believe it will also be in Europe” said Liviu Gavrilă, country manager of Enery Romania, in a press conference. Currently, the largest photovoltaic park in Europe has 650 MW and is in Germany.

Gavrilă showed that Romania has become extremely attractive for major investors in the sector.

According to him, the development of the new photovoltaic park, with batteries and a connection station, may lead to the emergence of other related investments. "Everything that we may not believe at the moment will appear. We are talking about hydrogen, data centers and all sorts of other things that can be co-located, hybridized in all sorts of ways, in such a way as to maximize that connection to the grid. I think Romania should somehow think that it has this advantage," the Enery representative also said.

In turn, Toma Petcu, president of the Giurgiu County Council and former Minister of Energy, stated that there are two companies interested in developing data centers in Giurgiu county, following the large number of photovoltaic projects with storage that are being built in the county.

"Speaking of the data center, there are two intentions, two companies, one American, one European, that have this intention to come to discussions, being interested in this investment, especially having the storage in batteries. In the coming period we will have meetings with them at the level of the County Council and, of course, with those who develop this investment", Petcu showed, refusing to mention the names of the companies.

Currently, there are photovoltaic parks in Romania with a total installed capacity of 3.7 GW, to which is added 3.6 GW in prosumer solar panels. In the next three years, it is estimated that Romania will have an installed capacity of 10-11 GW in photovoltaic panels.
